RMS_Devlog #16: The Workbench

Dear Martians!

The Workbench will allow you to repair broken components of the Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) that are used in Mars rovers. Each rover is equipped with several boards that consist of different elements (coils, resistors, memory etc.). They are susceptible to damage and if they break, the PCB stops working and it needs to be repaired. You can print a new board with all its components or print individual elements that need to be soldered onto the PCB.

Repair process:
Before making repairs, you have to choose the PCB that needs to be fixed. Initially, you don’t get any additional information about the wear levels of specific parts (however, you can guess which parts may be damaged by the appearance of the material).

The Workbench allows you to work in three modes:

  • Disassembly mode: In this mode, you will choose which components you want to disassemble. You must then melt the solder alloy and remove the items from the PCB.
  • Assembly mode: In this mode, you can choose which elements you want to mount on the PCB. You must then solder the joints.
  • Analysis mode: In this mode, you can check the current state of each component and see if it needs to be repaired.

While using the workbench, the player first enter the analysis mode to identify the faulty components. Once you’ve checked which elements need to be repaired or replaced, you have to print new parts using the 3D printer. In the disassembly mode, you have to remove the damaged components and then in the assembly mode, you will solder new ones onto the PCB.
